I have been on a birth control adventure recently, and it’s definitely been an interesting one to say the least…

I was on the pill for about 11 months, then I had to stop because it was elevating my blood pressure. However it did regulate my periods and make them lighter than they had been before.

So I switched to an IUD – I got Mirena. I had that for 15 months. Then it started causing me absurd amounts of pain and I had it removed. But before the pain, I absolutely loved it! I had no periods at all.

That left me trying another pill with a lower dose of estrogen in hopes that it wouldn’t mess with my blood pressure. I don’t know if it messed with my blood pressure or not – I was only on it for about 3 weeks. Then Trump became out President-Elect and the nation went crazy about birth control.

And I decided to go ahead and switch to an implant  – I got Nexplanon last Wednesday. (This might seem a bit of a hasty or rash decision, but I had been considering the implant before the election.)

The insertion was a lot easier than I originally anticipated it being. I don’t know where I’d gotten the idea that they would cut your arm to put it in, but that’s not what my ob/gyn did. She numbed my arm with lidocaine and injected the implant into my arm. Then she put a bandaid on the injection site, and put a pressure bandage around my arm.

After 24 hours, I took it off and changed the bandaid. At that point there were no issues that I could see. I was bruised a little, but that was to be expected and didn’t concern me at all.

Last week on Friday, I was sitting and watching Netflix on the tv. I had my elbow on the arm of the chair and leaned on it to adjust myself – my arm hurt. So I decided to take a look – after pulling my arm out of my sleeve, I noticed liquid at the edge of the bandaid. I removed it and discovered that I had blisters where the adhesive had been… Apparently, it seems as though I’ve discovered an allergy to adhesives. This could prove to be quite an issue in life..

So, as I’m writing this it’s Tuesday, and the blisters are getting better. They definitely do still hurt (not shocking) but I can wear long sleeves without gauze and an ace wrap on my arm. And I can touch them to apply Neosporin (and now a prescription ointment) without cringing in pain.

The implant itself doesn’t seem to be causing any major issues though.

For Matt, Elli’s has been a safe haven, a way to take care of his heartsick mom and fatherless little brother. When the woman who took him in passes away, Matt has no idea what he’s going to do next. Until Rowan returns to their small town and becomes his new business partner. But after everything that went down between them, it’s clear that Rowan resents him.

Excerpts:

Excerpt 1:

Billy cursed under his breath.

“What’s wrong?” his agent, C.J., asked. “I thought this is what you wanted.”

“It is,” he whispered into the phone. “It’s just . . . the timing isn’t good. Katie’s—”

“Look, Billy, it’s only three weeks, but it’s a big three weeks. The new songs are great, but we gotta road test them. You keep this up and I can guarantee you a record deal, but I have to get you out there. People need to hear you. There was a lot of buzz after that performance in Miami this summer, and to tell the truth, the arrest and all the rest of it didn’t hurt that angry rock star image, either. There’s no bad publicity, not for someone like you, but fans have short memories.”

“I know,” he agreed, “and God knows I need the money—”

“Look, it’s just three weeks. She can’t be without you for three freaking weeks?”

Could she? She was getting worse, there was no doubt about it. But if she started seeing the doctor, and if he could talk her into staying with Rhiannon . . .

“I don’t know. I guess. I’ll figure something out.”

C.J. was all business. “Okay, then. I’ll have a car pick you up first thing Monday to bring you straight to the airport. I’ll meet you there, and we’ll sign the contracts. Just leave everything to me.”

“Fine.”

“And Billy? I had to pull a lot of strings to get you on this leg of the tour. This is the perfect audience for you. Don’t screw this up. You’re not a cat. You don’t have nine lives, and even if you did, you’ve about run out.”

“Yeah, I get it. I’ll see you Monday.”

“That’s what I want to hear.”

Excerpt 2:

A door clanged open. Tom stood and walked toward the hallway, then nodded in her direction. She tucked her clutch under her arm and followed.

Billy’s back was to her as she came around the corner. Snug black jeans hugged his long legs. A long-sleeved black shirt with the tails out and the cuffs turned up showed off the tattoos covering his forearms. His hair was messy and loose, hanging well past his shoulders. He and Tommy were speaking, and when Tommy glanced in her direction, Billy turned slowly, then snapped back to Tommy when he realized who was standing behind him.

“What the fuck is she doing here?” he practically growled. “I didn’t tell you to call her.”

“He didn’t call me,” she answered, hurt as well as angry. “And is that all you have to say?”

The man standing before her was a far cry from the one she’d kissed goodbye over two months ago. His neatly trimmed goatee had grown out into a scraggly beard. He needed a shower badly, and although it was the middle of the night, he wore sunglasses. A long, thin cut above his eyebrow was held together with several Steri-Strips. Another near the bridge of his nose had begun to swell. An angry red mark blossomed on his cheek, and there were hints that his eye would soon be black and blue.

“If I wanted you here, I would’ve called you. You shouldn’t be here.” He scowled at Tommy as if he were the reason behind all of them being there.

Kate slipped off the sergeant’s jacket. “Neither should you.” She tapped on the thick glass to get the desk officer’s attention, then waited by the inner door until she came around to retrieve the jacket.

Billy watched as she walked back, his mouth curling into that trademark smile, the one that still caused her to melt like a teenager.

Not this time. This time, she was pissed.

“Well, I see you came dressed to impress.” His grin grew, and the cut on his bottom lip split open, blood welling in the spot. A memory flashed before her of a night long ago when she hadn’t been nearly as angry as she was now, yet she had punched him in the stomach.

Tempting.

Excerpt 3:

She’d been standing in the rooftop garden, looking out over Tribeca toward the Freedom Tower, when he came up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders. Surprisingly, she leaned into him. Other than the times she’d allowed him to hold her when she cried or kiss her good night, they’d hardly touched. Emboldened, he wrapped his arms around her. He felt rather than heard her sigh. They stood there watching the sun reflect off the glass of the lone tower as it lowered in the late afternoon sky. He would have stood there as long as she wanted—until the sun fell all the way into the Pacific Ocean, if need be.

“You okay?” he asked.

“No, but I will be.”

“I have something for you.” Taking her hand, he led her to a chair. He sat across from her and pulled the iconic blue box from his pocket.

“What’s this?”

“I’m ashamed to say it’s your birthday present, but that’s what it is. I’m sorry I didn’t give it to you before. I had it. I even have the receipt, if you don’t believe me. I bought it in Atlanta. I was too busy screwing up to give it to you.”

She rested the box in her lap as carefully as if he’d told her it was a vial of nitroglycerin.

“Open it.”

She tugged off the white satin ribbon, letting it drift to the floor, and lifted the bracelet from the box.

“They’re olive leaves,” he said. “Of course I didn’t know I’d be needing an olive branch when I bought it. Kind of appropriate, don’t you think?”

“It’s beautiful.” She slipped it over her delicate wrist, admiring it, and then leaned forward and kissed him—a kiss that started out chaste, but she took it further. Much further.

At that moment, he’d believed he was forgiven, that no matter what happened, they’d be okay.

But now he wasn’t so sure.

teaser-1

Excerpt:

I flung the curtain open and stepped out, staring down at my breasts as I cupped them, pretending I didn’t see Jameson at all. “Lu, what do you think of my breasts in this bra? Do they look perky enough?”

I looked up, gasping in shock at seeing Jameson. “Oh, no,” I said, lifting my hand to caress the skin of my chest. “Jameson, I didn’t know you were in here.” Luella was snorting, trying to hold in her laughter at my exaggerated show. “But while you’re here, why don’t I get your opinion?” I cupped my boobs again, lifting them for inspection. “Do they look perky enough in this bra?”

Finally taking a moment to meet his eyes, I prepared myself for a look of embarrassed shock. Instead, I was greeted with overwhelming heat. If his eyes could reach out and touch me, they would have singed my skin. The smile slipped from my lips and I swallowed, trying to wet my dry mouth.

His eyes scanned all the way down to my pumps and back up to the breasts I lifted for his inspection. A lifetime seemed to pass as his stare stroked a fire across my skin. My breath stuttered out between my lips at the way he took me in. It threw me off and I was struggling to collect myself.

“Like what you see, Jameson?” Lu asked, laughter filling her voice.

His eyes blinked a few times, pulling himself from the trance. Looking between us, he seemed to make a decision. Standing tall, I prepared myself for whatever he would throw my way.

He focused his eyes on me and let them slide up my body again. But this time was different, it was an intentional ogling that shocked me. Jameson never stared at me like that. I would catch him every once in a while, checking me out, but never so openly ogling my body.

When he dropped the bag at Lu’s feet and started taking steps toward me, a fluttering kicked up in my chest. But I set my jaw and held his stare. Whatever his plan was, I would win.

Nothing could have prepared me for when he squatted down and hoisted me up over his shoulder. I let out a loud yelp and braced my hands on his firm ass. As he began walking with me still over his shoulder, I beat at his back and demanded, “Put me down, Jameson King!” His response was to slap my ass and keep walking. “Luella, help me!”

That traitor only laughed.

“Jameson, put me down!”

“Fine,” he said calmly, dropping me to the floor.

A victorious smile formed on my lips until I saw he had brought me into the fitting room. He winked before turning back to Luella, who was still laughing in her chair, and said, “Ignore the moan of pleasure coming from in here. It’s just me fucking Evie.” Her smile falling was the last thing I saw before the curtain closed and he turned to me.

My back hit the mirror as I backed away from him.

“Jameson,” I tried to reason. “Don’t you-”

My words were cut off as he covered my mouth with his hand, only letting muffled groans escape. “Oh yeah, Evie. Rub all over my dick. That’s a good girl.”

My eyes were going to pop out of my head from shock hearing Jameson talk dirty to me with his sister right outside. My body just leaned against the glass as I stared into his cocky eyes. They held victory because he had the upper hand and knew it. How was I losing?

I had reached out to grab his crotch when the curtain was ripped back and Lu’s eyes flicked from me to him, her lip curled in disgust. “Fucking gross, Jameson.”

Tossing his head back, he let out a deep laugh and removed his hand from my mouth. “Maybe that’ll teach you guys to stop playing with me.” He edged out of the small enclosure, kissing Lu on the head on his way out. “See you later, baby sister.” He gave me a wink before turning to walk out of the gold room, tossing over his shoulder, “Enjoy your dress shopping.”

We stood frozen, watching his retreating back. “Well, shit,” I muttered, dropping my shoulders in defeat.

Lu smirked. “Looks like you need to up your game, Evelyn.”

NaBloPoMo – Day 15

The kindest thing I can do for myself when I’m in pain – physical or emotional – is…

  • stay in comfy clothes
  • drink coffee (hot or iced)
  • read books
  • watch Netflix
  • curl up under blankets (if necessary)
  • disconnect from social media/isolate
  • connect with select few people
  • hot bath with LUSH product(s) (if I have access to a large enough tub)
